How to Update Makeup for Fall

How to Update Makeup for Fall

When summer breezes and warm temperatures finally begin to fade into fall, so does your complexion. While you may have longed for that summer golden glow--and used makeup to safely achieve it--the fall season calls for a fresh, opaque finish to your complexion and makeup. So, just as you might update your wardrobe from shorts to long skirts, you should also update your makeup for fall.

Things You'll Need:

Lip balm and pencil

Foundation makeup for your skin type and tone

Blush

Eyebrow pencil

Eye shadow

Eyeliner

Step
1

Switch to a lighter foundation base as you update your makeup for fall. However, you might want to do this gradually, especially if you've spent a lot of time outdoors or tanning during the summer months. Plan to have one to three shades of foundation available that are appropriate for your skin tone throughout the year.

Step
2

Trade the bronzer for brighter cheek colors, such as reds and pinks. To apply, lightly brush the apples of your cheeks and your chin for a healthy, fresh glow.

Step
3

Shade your eyelids in full with eye shadows that leave an opaque finish. While you may have been using bright colors on your eyelids in summer, smoky colors work best for fall. Experiment with darker shades of brown, green, gray and navy blue.

Step
4

Add depth to your eyes by applying the darkest shade of eye shadow to the outer crease of your eyelid for contour.

Step
5

Define your eyebrows for fall with a soft brown eyebrow pencil. To create a dramatic arched effect, tweeze just under the natural arch of your brow and the widest part of your upper eye brow. Guard against going overboard though, or you'll end up looking surprised all the time.

Step
6

Highlight your upper eyelid just under the brow with a light application of a soft, complimentary color, such as peach or gold. This will accentuate the arch of your brow.

Step
7

Define your eyes by applying black or dark brown eyeliner pencil to the rims of your lower and upper lids. Try to avoid drawing thick lines which can result in a hard look. Instead, apply short strokes and gently blend them together with your fingertip or a Q-Tip to achieve a smoky, sultry look.

Step
8

Leave the bright lip colors to summer and update your lips for fall with a bare or neutral lip balm with a layer of light to medium brown lip pencil on top. This creates a natural, bare lip look that's perfect for fall.

Tips & Warnings

Fall is also a great time to purge your makeup collection of outdated makeup, as some chemicals can go bad after a few months. Mascara should be changed every 3 months, no matter how much or little you use it, and powders and foundations should be changed every 6 months to avoid eye and skin irritation.
